'Tis the season for gift-giving and independent publisher Circlet Press is in the spirit. Each day of December up to the 23rd, a free story will appear at circlet.com in what the publisher calls their "Erotic Sci-Fi Advent Calendar." Just like the advent calendars which deliver a chocolate treat each day, circlet.com will have one delicious short story of erotic fantasy or erotic science fiction. New BU member Lynda Hilburn's latest publications include Dark Harvest, the second book in the Kismet Knight, Vampire Psychologist series, which was just was released in October of 2008. (The first book was The Vampire Shrink, released October, 2007)
Her short story "Blood Song" will appear in the upcoming anthology, Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance available Feb. '09 in the UK and April '09 in the USA.

Bad-Ass Faeries 2: Just Plain Bad, edited by Bu member Danielle Ackley-McPhail and with stories by Trisha Wooldridge, Christy Tohara, C.S. Haviland , L. Jagi Lamplighter, Elaine Corvidae, and Skyla Dawn Cameron, from Marietta Publishing, is nominated for best Anthology EPPIE Award! In the horror category, BU author Kim Richards represents the women with her story Death Masks. In non-fiction, The Slippery Art of Book Reviewing, co-authored by Mayra Calvani, was nominated. The Electronically Published Internet Connection ( EPIC) presents the 9th annual EPPIE Awards, which honor the finest electronically published books of the year. Winners will be presented at the EPPIE Banquet during EPICon 2009.

Broad Universe member Brenda Cooper has won the 2008 Endeavour Award for her book The Silver Ship and the Sea. The award honors a distinguished Science Fiction or Fantasy book written by a Pacific Northwest author or authors and published in the previous year, and was presented this evening before the opening ceremonies of Orycon 30.

Broad Universe members Ursula K. Le Guin, Anne Harris, Jennifer Stevenson, Sue Lange, Amy Sterling Casil, Sylvia Kelso, and Nancy Jane Moore are all part of Book View Cafe, a new venture in online publishing. Book View Cafe has everything from flash fiction to novels, and offers many genres, though it's heaviest on science fiction and fantasy. Most of the content is free, but some authors will also be offering expanded work, subscriptions, print versions, and additional content for a fee. Right now there are 21 authors on Book View Cafe, all with significant credits in more conventional publishing. New fiction is posted every day, and members are also blogging about writing and related subjects on the Book View Cafe Blog.

Laura's first novel, named Peacekeeper, begins a new series from Roc called The Major Ariane Kedros Novels. Peacekeeper will be out on bookshelves Dec 2, 2008. Publishers Weekly calls it a "crisp military SF debut" and says, “Reeve drives the story at a breakneck pace, providing a fine mix of derring-do, honor and courage, and the familial bickering and affection of a close-knit crew.”

Female finalists at the Gaylactic Spectrum Awards this year included K.S. Augustin, Joselle Vanderhooft, Elizabeth Bear, Sarah Hall, Jo Walton, Cassandra Clare & Ruby deBrazier, Valerie Z. Lewis, Leigh Ellwood, Julia Talbot and Catherine Lundoff, who were all nominated in either the best Novel or Best Short Fiction categories. The Gaylactic Spectrum Awards were created in 1998 by the Gaylactic Network to honor works in science fiction, fantasy and horror which include positive explorations of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered characters, themes, or issues.
